During the day, busy with street traders and retailers sell anything from food to merchandise, and a seemingly chaotic traffic of scooters, bikes and cars. And during the night, the home to vibrant bars, buzzing nightclubs and cheap local draft bear. It’s here that families will also find the Hanoi Weekend Night Market, Hoan Kiem Lake (Turtle Lake) and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. 

Around the corner lays the French Quarter (Ba Dinh District), where the government offices are located and where French-colonial architecture dominates the landscape. Here is where you will also find sights like the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Other highlights include Bach Ma Temple, Hanoi Opera House and the Temple of Literature. And if you are feeling brave, four hours drive from Hanoi is the stunning Halong Bay, another UNESCO World Heritage Site of incredible natural beauty. So striking in fact that it has featured as the backdrop for Hollywood movies ‘Pan’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island’.

When to visit

Hanoi has a tropical monsoon climate, with wet and hot summers and cold, dry winters.

The best time to visit Hanoi is autumn, September to November, and spring, March to April, when the weather is warm and rain infrequent. 

During the summer temperatures are high, but so is the rain, which can cause occasional flooding. And during winter temperatures can drop below 10°C (50F), but if you don’t mind the rain or the cold, Hanoi is open for visitors all year round.

Places to eat in Hanoi

Vietnamese food consists of rice, used in made forms from pancakes to noodles; fish sauce in abundant amounts; herbs; different types of meant; and tropical fruits.

Head for the Old Quarter for a taste of street food and traditional Vietnamese cuisine. At night this part of the city is also buzzing with people sitting outside on the streets and enjoying nibbles and a cheap drink. But don’t be surprised to find French baguettes sold alongside traditional dishes. The city’s French heritage is also alive and well when it comes to food.

While the restaurants where might look simple and have a street appearance, don’t let looks deceive you. The food Hanoi is truly delicious.
